Ajit Doval in Beijing for Key India-China Border Talks
New Delhi: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has arrived in Beijing for the 25th round of India-China Special Representatives (SR) talks on the long-running boundary dispute. Doval, who is India's Special Representative for the boundary question, will co-chair the talks with Chinese Foreign Minister and China's Special Representative Wang Yi on August 25.
The latest round comes at a crucial time for India-China relations, which have been gradually stabilising after years of tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
LAC, Border Stability and De-escalation on Agenda
The Special Representatives mechanism is one of the key diplomatic channels between New Delhi and Beijing for addressing the boundary dispute. The mechanism was established in 2003 and deals with the India-China boundary, which stretches for around 3,488 km.
According to reports, the two sides are expected to discuss the boundary question, border management and maintaining peace and tranquillity along the LAC. Broader bilateral, regional and international issues are also expected to feature in the discussions.
Why the 25th Round Matters
India-China ties came under severe strain after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and the prolonged military standoff in eastern Ladakh.
Since then, both countries have taken steps aimed at stabilising the situation along the border. The 24th round of talks, held in New Delhi in August 2025, resulted in several understandings, including strengthening border management mechanisms and exploring further steps towards managing the boundary dispute.
The upcoming meeting therefore provides another opportunity for both sides to continue diplomatic engagement on the unresolved boundary issue.
Talks Come Ahead of Expected Xi Jinping India Visit
The timing of Doval's Beijing visit is also significant because Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India for the BRICS Summit in September, although his participation has not yet been officially confirmed.
The Special Representatives talks could provide an important diplomatic backdrop ahead of possible high-level engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping.
India-China Relations Show Signs of Thaw
While the border dispute remains unresolved, diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries has shown signs of improvement compared with the period immediately following the 2020 clashes.
Both sides have maintained that peace and tranquillity along the border are essential for the broader relationship. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also reiterated that stability along the border is an important prerequisite for healthy India-China ties.

The 25th round of Special Representatives talks is scheduled for August 25 in Beijing. The outcome will be closely watched for any progress on border management, de-escalation and the broader effort to stabilise India-China relations.
For India, maintaining peace along the LAC while protecting its strategic interests remains a key priority.
