China's HOVERAir VERSA Uses Modular Design to Navigate the FCC's Foreign Drone Ban
China-based drone maker HOVERAir is taking an unusual approach to the United States' increasingly restrictive drone market with its new VERSA, a modular camera system designed to function both as a handheld gimbal camera and an autonomous flying device.
The product's architecture could give HOVERAir a potential way to navigate the regulatory challenges facing newly introduced foreign-made drones in the US, although important questions remain over how the VERSA will ultimately be treated under the Federal Communications Commission's rules.
HOVERAir VERSA Takes a Different Approach to the Drone Market
The VERSA is built around a detachable camera module. In its standard configuration, the device works as a compact handheld camera equipped with a three-axis mechanical gimbal for stabilized footage.
Users can then attach a separate flight module with propellers, transforming the camera into an autonomous flying platform. HOVERAir says the system can take off from the user's hand and track subjects without requiring a conventional remote controller.
